04.25.08 MNLA's award winning Tribeca Green greenroof project is currently highlighted in the high-end Turkish monthly magazine Yapi which focuses on architecture design culture and art. Click here to view the article (partially in english) Jennifer Cooper, RLA, Landscape Architect, was recently a guest speaker at the Paesaggio & Energia (Landscape & Energy) International Workshop in Bologna, Italy. Jennifer's presentation highlighted the greenroof work of Mathews Nielsen and outlined the current sustainability goals and challenges in New York City including Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC. An article by Jennifer covering the same topics will be published in the Spring 2008 issue of the AIAPP (Association of Italian Landscape Architects) Magazine, Paysage. Sustainable Landscape Design Symposium Signe Nielsen recently spoke as a panelist at "Park Design for the 21st Century", a symposium hosted by the Design Trust for Public Space and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation at the Center for Architecture. The afternoon-long event highlighted strategies from the upcoming DDC manual "High Performance Landscape Guidelines", the third in a series of sustainable design manuals, of which Signe is also a co-author. The new design improvements will reflect the spirit of the surrounding landscape and the culture of Asser Levy Seaside Park. 125th Street MNLA is leading the public space streetscape design of 125th Street with the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Columbia University. The major goal of the project is to create a framework for revitalization while bringing green space and intermodal transportation facilities to the community. 125th Street is the main street of Harlem and home to the famous Apollo Theater and Cotton Club. This project provides a link between the community and the new Harlem Piers Waterfront Park. NYU Mercer Street Plaza MNLA recently won the commission for New York University's Mercer Street Plaza. The approximately 13,000 square foot plaza site is located in the heart of NYU's campus and will become an important gathering space not only for the University but for the entire community. Construction Moving Along at Hudson River Park Segment 3 MNLA is currently overseeing construction of our design for Segment 3 of the Hudson River Park in New York City. The first phase, from Houston Street to Laight Street, will open in June. The $100 million park segment includes 14 acres of open space on nearly 3/4 of a mile of the Hudson River and on two piers. MNLA led the master plan effort between 1993 and1997, and will continue our lead role through the construction observation phases of the remaining phases until the park segment is complete in 2012. MNLA and the POPS MNLA has been working on the public plaza components associated with two hotel projects in New York City- the Trump SoHo, with Bayrock Development Group; and the Charlton Street Hotel with Extell Development Company. With the October 2007 New York City Department of City Planning POPS zoning amendment, there is more focus directed at the quality, visibility and access of POPS. MNLA's efforts are aimed at enhancing the vitality of these projects within their neighborhood with a higher standard of design quality, in conceptual approach, materiality, and detailing. MNLA Helping to Build a More Sustainable Pratt MNLA recently started work on Myrtle Avenue Building and Plaza at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. This project heralds Pratt's commitment to sustainable initiatives as Pratt is the first of nine academic institutions to sign onto Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030 agenda as a "2030 Challenge Partner." With this agreement, Pratt has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in the next ten years. Underpinning the project's sustainability goals, Myrtle Avenue's 1/2 acre plaza associated with the 100,000 square foot mixed use building will be the premiere gathering space on the north campus, providing significant programmable open space within the campus and to the neighborhood. In addition, the site is situated above the Long Island Aquifer and the plaza will allow for on-site storm water retention and provide generous areas for native plantings that are integral to the storm water quality and quantity functions of the open space. The project is anticipated to become LEED gold certified. Lincoln Center Staging and demolition has commenced for Lincoln Center's Promenade Project. MNLA designed the public space and landscape features at the Columbus Avenue frontage and has been working closely with Diller Scofidio + Renfro on the Promenade project since 2004. MNLA has also been involved in series of other Lincoln Center Redevelopment projects including the 65th Street Streetscape and Public Spaces projects. MNLA Featured in AIA Center for Architecture International Exhibit MNLA's work on the South Bronx Greenway and Columbia Street Bikeway was featured in the AIA Center for Architecture's recent exhibit titled "Berlin New York Dialogues." The exhibit sought to investigate the change in these two cities by looking at the contemporary built environment and mechanisms of urban regeneration - the social, political, economic, and cultural processes that affect building.
