Kingsborough Community College Library Plaza
Brooklyn, New York
Client: Dormitory Authority of the State of New York
and City University of New York
Budget: $1.3 million (combined)
Library Plaza is a major focal point of this campus, which is prominently situated on the Atlantic Ocean at the east end of Coney Island. Formerly an unused sunken plaza, it is now an at-grade gathering area featuring wave-like benches positioned to respond to pedestrian movement patterns and future connections. Imprinted score lines in the pigmented concrete and shoreline plantings recall the influence of water on the site. Academic Village extends the campus northward, adding
142,000 SF of new classrooms, parking, and four acres of
developed open space. Materials used on both projects respond
to the influence of the site’s context and exposed location.
