Staten Island Children’s Museum
Staten Island, New York
Client: NYC Department of General Services
Budget: $ 685,000

Formerly an 1870’s vintage maintenance building, the lively new Children’s Museum is part of the 60-acre Snug Harbor Cultural Center. The building’s entrance, formerly a loading dock, faces an inviting vista of open lawn with 100-year old trees. An orientation amphitheater anchors one end of a circulation spine, while a decorative paving circle for temporary sculpture exhibits defines the other end. Between these two elements is a paved plaza with broad steps for gathering and enjoying views of the open lawn. A seasonal garden lines the curvilinear path leading visitors back to awaiting buses.

Additional work at SICM included transforming an 1897 barn into additional display space with a connector to the main museum building, an outdoor playground, landscape restoration, and new circulation routes for this historic facility.
