Hudson River Park Pier 40
New York, New York
Client: Hudson River Park Trust
Budget: $4.5 million

Pier 40 is a former cruise ship terminal building that extends out into the Hudson River. Until recently, the facility was a parking garage, bus depot and office space. Completed in 2004, Mathews Nielsen converted the first floor into an athletic complex for public use. The Pier 40 facility includes a 3.5 acre sand and rubber – filled synthetic turf multi-purpose field that accommodates simultaneous use of baseball/ soccer fields. The surrounding loading dock has been transformed into dugout areas and spectator seating; portions of the interior were upgraded for fire safety and public restrooms.
