Route 9A Reconstruction
New York, New York
Client: New York State Department of Transportation
Budget: $ 48 million (Urban Design Elements)
The West Side Highway has been transformed into an urban boulevard from the Battery to 59th Street. Planting designs along the entire 4.5 mile corridor establish a strong identity for the boulevard while providing diversity in response to neighborhood character, genetic disease resistance and long-term care. A continuous bicycle and rollerblade path is screened from the road by dense, raised plantings. Pedestrian crossings are marked by textured granite to announce arrival at Hudson River Park and to slow bikers and bladers at these intersections.
Selection of ground cover, shrubs, and canopy trees respond to the uniquely urban issues of vibration, compaction, root space ratios, vehicular and pedestrian safety.
We were the landscape architects and urban designers for four of the seven segments construction document packages, and provided continuous site supervision between 43rd and 59th Streets and Thomas F. Smith Park.
