Jamaica Transportation Center Plan and Urban Design
Jamaica, Queens, New York
Client: Greater Jamaica Development Corp.
Budget: $21 million (Urban Design)
The anticipated arrival of the AirTrain service linking JFK airport with Jamaica prompted an intensive study and implementation plan for this 1.3 mile, mixed-use district that serves as a transportation hub for Queens. The firm's design recommendations for new open space and new recreational opportunities, improvements to pedestrian and vehicular circulation and the "greening" of this densely populated area are based on a survey of existing recreation resources, a circulation analysis, and an open space needs analysis.
Design models for each type of streetscape in the area include information on best horticultural practices related to planting in urban areas and include the use of continuous soil trenches and structural soils.
