72nd Street Subway Station
New York, New York
Client: Metropolitan Transportation Authority
Budget: $ 4.6 million

Mathews Nielsen designed the pedestrian plazas and park for one of the most significant subway station expansions on the city’s west side. The plazas includes the original historic control building and the new station facility to the north. Design for the space also incorporates the existing Verdi Square to provide a major new open space on the Upper West Side. The plazas feature a distinctive pavement, landscaping, raised planters, and site furnishings.

The main plaza has become a popular gathering area since its completion and has set a precedent for similar transit hubs.
